BY GEORGE, I THINK HE’S GOT IT!

So, we’ve been potty training Bubs since last September. Well, we tried last September. And he ended up not being even remotely ready. So, we revisited potty training when he was 2.5 years. It’s been a very frustrating 4 months…

Let me take you back to February. I tried introducing him to his potty. He liked it. But, he thought it was a toy. He ended up playing with it and put his toys in it. Not cool. Bye-bye, potty. Since we needed a new toilet seat cover anyways, we went out and got one that had an extra toddler cover. This way, we can just give him a step stool and let him go in the “big kid” toilet. It worked for a while. He would go poo poo and pee pee when we would sit him down. Fun, right!? That, too, was short-lived.

The past couple of months, Bubs had been extremely reluctant to sitting in the toilet. Even when I know he’s ready to poop. He just has this face. Even if he’s not trying to hide, or if he’s playing. There’s always a sign that he’s gotta go. And whenever I see it, I try to tell him we have to go to the toilet. But he really really doesn’t wanna do it! UGH!

Yesterday, I was talking to my sis-in-law about potty training and she said that all my nephews were over 2yrs old when they were potty trained. The longest time it took to potty train for her was 2 yrs 8 months. Bubs is 2 yrs 10 months!!! Then she told us the story of how she did it: by accident! Pun intended! (You’ll understand in a minute.)

So, it was hot and sunny. My nephew peed in his pants. But his mom didn’t have anything to change him into. They had to walk home in the hot sun. After that, he was potty trained!

This gave me an idea. Maybe Bubs NEEDS to feel that nasty wetness in his underwear so that he’ll know…it’s sooo not fun. I went to Target to buy him some “big boy” underwear. He was so excited. And TODAY is the very first day of some hardcore potty training. I think we’re making progress. Let me document this moment.

About 15 - 20 minutes after I put his “big boy” underwear on, Bubs dropped what he was doing and turned to me. “Mom, I don’t have to go potty.” Oh, yeah? How ‘bout we go potty right now? “No! No, no, no! I don’t have to go potty.” He, of course, runs to the corner. Yeah. You really don’t have to go. Pssh. I tried to ask if he’d like to go to the potty. He still declined. I even tried a little bribery. “You want some chocolate after you go potty?” “No!!! I don’t have to go potty!!!” Fine! Let’s see how this works out for you.

5 minutes later…”Mommy, I gotta go potty…” Whoops. And he did. All over his Toy Story underwear (and the carpet). Nice. So, we changed his underwear.

Half an hour later, “Mommy, I gotta go potty!!!” Alright! He rushes to the bathroom with his hand on his butt! But, we got there just a tiny bit too late. He’s halfway done. But at least half of it made it into the toilet this time! But still, the other half is smeared all over his underwear. Yikes! But good job for telling me you’ve got to go to the potty!

Another hour later, “Mommy, I gotta go potty!” Oops. He already did. All over the carpet, again. But, at least now, he’s telling me. :) Good job, Bubs! We’re on our way to being potty trained!!! Yaaaay!!!
